“A disease called ADDICTION”

Category:

Description

More people than ever before find themselves addicted to substances, yet are unwilling to seek treatment because of the misery and stigma associated with it.  They feel unsure, scared and overwhelmed because they don’t have the knowledge or understanding of what addiction is.

This book is a general introduction to addiction and includes information on how  psychological, biological, physiological and environmental/social factors play a role in addiction.  It covers the stages and symptoms of addiction along with statistics on the use of specific drugs globally and in South-Africa.

It will educate you about the effects and painful cycle of addiction and also introduce you to different treatment options available to break that cycle.

Throughout the book you will read a story about one woman’s struggle with alcohol and prescription drugs to illustrate how substance use can easily become an uncontrollable addiction.

It will give you new insights and knowledge to understand what addiction is and what it is not.

I enjoyed the book overall, it was an easy read. I really enjoyed the sections that deal with brain chemistry and the section on learned behaviour.

I definitely learned something new with regards to the classical conditioning that occurs when using substances, it brought such clarity the below quote for me: “You don’t get over an addiction by not using anymore. You recover by creating a new life where it is easier to not use. If you don’t create a new life, then all the factors that brought you to your addiction will catch up with you again.” Anonymous.

Thank you for the hard work that you put into this, I certainly walk away having learnt something new.

Wow, such insight in the book, the layout of it from beginning to end, how you incorporated the topics, it is amazing and easy to follow and understand. The case study is beautiful from the way you started to the end, it makes the assignment easy to follow. It is not just a book you can brush through and complete an assignment , it needs time and dedication , because I believe that is what you put into the book.
    Amazing work!
